We started 2017 with predictions on what the year will bring for enterprise DevOps adoption, and as we approach the end of the year, we have seen more enterprises using DevOps-leading practices to both help keep up with innovative companies and be more agile, adaptable and scalable. For some organizations, DevOps represents a departure from traditional processes, roles and even responsibilities in favor of enabling more efficiency and speed for the business.
Now that containers are showing up with increased frequency in production environments, the challenges associated with securing those containers are becoming more apparent to developers and IT security teams alike. The latest 2.6 release of the Aqua Container Security Platform (CSP) from Aqua Security makes generally available runtime security software for containers running on both Windows and Linux.
DevOps adoption is increasing by the minute, with more companies transforming their culture and technology to implement this model. The 2017 State of DevOps report speaks directly to their motivation: Organizations effectively utilizing DevOps principlesachieved 46x more frequent software deployments than their competitors, 96x faster recovery from failures, 440x faster lead time for changes and had higher levels of operational efficiency and overall customer satisfaction.
Google and Cisco Systems today announced a strategic alliance in which the two companies will work closely to extend the reach of Google cloud services based on Kubernetes and other container technologies to on-premises environments based on Cisco infrastructure. Fabio Gori, senior director of cloud solutions marketing for Cisco, says the first fruits of that alliance will show up in the early part of 2018 with general availability of solutions starting to appear in the second half of 2018.
Docker Inc. at the DockerCon Europe 2017 conference extended its alliance with IBM as part of an effort to entice more IT organizations to lift and shift existing legacy applications into the cloud using Docker containers. Meanwhile, IBM announced that its middleware software used to run legacy applications now will be available as containers on the Docker Store.
As seen in a recent DigiCert report, an overwhelming majority of companies believe that an integrated security and devops team makes sense. In fact, 98 percent of survey 300 US respondents (a third from IT or security) are either planning to or have alreafy launched such an effort.
Lets look at traditional, linear application development process. It follows a sequential methodology, which means the bugs that are present in the current build will have to wait for the next build to be addressed.
The concept of employing separate platforms to monitor and secure containers soon may be obsolete if Sysdig has its way. The company has added a Sysdig Secure module to provide visibility into container runtimes and apply polices to secure them and analyze how they might have been compromised.
More evidence emerged today that Kubernetes is rapidly evolving into a platform on which some of the largest enterprise applications will be deployed. SAP announced that Vora 2.0, a big data analytics platform based on a distribution of the Apache Spark in-memory computing framework, has been redesigned to run on Kubernetes.
At the DockerCon Europe 2017 conference, Docker Inc. announced it has made the Kubernetes container orchestration engine an equal citizen to Docker Swam within the context of Docker Enterprise Edition (EE) container-as-a-service (CaaS) platform. David Messina, senior vice president of marketing for Docker Inc., says IT organizations now have the option to decide as they deploy a containerized application if they want to deploy it on Docker Swarm or Kubernetes, noting the container orchestration engine is now an optional feature of the CaaS environment.
